Applications are sought in all appropriate disciplines, but applications in the following disciplines are preferred: Business Administration, Economics, Education, Engineering, Law, Medical Sciences and TEFL.

Grant Activity

Applicants may propose research projects, teaching projects or a combination of both. For research projects, collaborative work with local scholars is desirable. Teaching and teaching/research grantees are expected to conduct seminars, give public lectures and advise on university curriculum and administration.

In addition to being a prestigious academic exchange program, the Fulbright Program is designed to expand and strengthen relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of other nations and to promote international understanding and cooperation. To support this mission, Fulbright Scholars will be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host community, in addition to their primary activities‎.

Locations

Any accredited institution or research center in Uruguay. The Commission for Educational Exchange between Uruguay and the United States will provide contact information for applicants seeking assistance with affiliation at Uruguay’s universities: University of the Republic (Uruguay’s comprehensive public university); UTEC (Technology University); University of MontevideoORT University; and Catholic University.

Grant Length

Three months. Flex grants must be four months.

Flex Description

Short-term Flex grants for teaching and/or research, consisting of two-month segments over two consecutive academic years, are available during the fall and/or spring semesters. Final approval of Flex grants will be contingent upon available funding.

Areas of Interest

While this award is open to any project in the disciplines listed above, there is interest in scholars who are in these particular specialty areas.

Preference will be given to projects in education, economics, law, medical sciences, science, technology, engineering and entrepreneurship, as well as Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL).

Application Requirements:

  • INVITATION REQUIREMENT
    A letter of invitation is preferred.
  • ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT
    Intermediate Spanish is required. Applicants mut submit the Language Proficiency Report: Self Evaluation and Language Proficiency Report: External Evaluation. Native speakers need only to complete the Language Proficiency Report: Self Evaluation.

    Four years of experience beyond the terminal degree is preferred.

  • STIPEND
    $2,600 per month for associate or full professors or professional equivalent; $2,400 per month for assistant professors or professional equivalent, payable in U.S. dollars. Monthly housing and living allowance of $900-$1,350, based on the number of accompanying dependents. Dependents must accompany grantee for at least 80 percent of the grant period to be eligible for benefits.
  • ESTIMATED TRAVEL AND RELOCATION ALLOWANCE
    International travel for the grantee up to $1,800; dependent travel of $800 for one dependent if dependent accompanies the grantee for at least 80 percent of the grant period. For Flex grants round-trip travel up to $1,800 will be included for the grantee only for each segment of the grant. One-time relocation allowance of $300.
  • ESTIMATED BOOK AND RESEARCH ALLOWANCE
    Allowance of $500 for educational materials to be donated to host institution upon grantee’s departure.
  • DEPENDENT TUITION ALLOWANCE
    One-time educational allowance of $250.
  • SPECIAL AWARD BENEFITS
    During their grant period, Fulbright U.S. Scholars in the Western Hemisphere (WHA) region may apply for a short-term regional travel grant for activities such as workshops, seminars, presentations, lectures, performances, exhibits, curricular advising, and similar projects, at institutions in eligible WHA countries (Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados and Eastern Caribbean, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, México, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, and Uruguay). The Regional Travel Program covers travel to and from the destination; lodging may be offered by the hosting institution. Scholars may only apply for this grant once in country on their Fulbright grant. Scholars who apply for the Flex award are ineligible for the Regional Travel Program. Final grant amounts will be determined prior to the start of the 2020-2021 academic year and are subject to the availability of funds. The United States Department of State and the Fulbright Commission in the host country reserve the right to alter, without notice, participating countries, number of awards and allowances.

Agriculture Award

Only applications in the following disciplines will be considered: Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.

Grant Activity

Advise on ongoing and future research, deliver seminars or short courses to local researchers and assist in cooperative research projects in all areas related to agricultural research.

National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA) – Research may be conducted in one of the five Experimental Stations: INIA Las Brujas (Canelones), INIA La Estanzuela (Colonia), INIA Treinta y Tres, INIA Salto Grande and INIA Tacuarembó.

Three months. Flex grants of two-month segments over two consecutive years are possible with prior arrangement with host institution and IIE/CIES.

Cátedras Fulbright

Through Cátedras Fulbright, US scholars will get the opportunity to share their research and work results with general audiences

Cátedras Fulbright is an initiative by the Fulbright Commission in Uruguay that aims at promoting the analysis of issues related to both Uruguay and the U.S. through bilateral dialogue among scholars and experts in different disciplines and fields from both countries.

  • Promote academic relationships in Uruguay with universities from the U.S. to promote research development in the country.
  • Increase Fulbright’s presence in the interior of the country.
  • Strengthen the cooperation links between universities and research centers.
  • Strengthen academic and institutional relationships with U.S. universities.
  • Foster the connection with Fulbright alumni.
