CALL FOR THE FULBRIGHT GRANT FOR MASTER’S AND PhD STUDIES IN THE U.S., IN COLLABORATION WITH ANII

Candidates can apply for master’s and PhD programs

The Fulbright Program was created to promote the mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and Uruguay through international education. Grants are offered through an open competition based on academic excellence and exemplary character and leadership qualities of applicants.

  • Uruguayan citizenship.
  • Higher education degree (+4-year program).
  • No significant previous experience in the U.S.
  • Outstanding academic records.
  • Work experience (2 years).
  • Leadership profile.
  • English knowledge (non-exclusive).
  • Share Fulbright’s and ANII’s goals.
  • Written commitment to come back to Uruguay upon the program’s end, as per Fulbright’s and ANII’s regulations.
  • Explicit acceptance of the Reglamento General del Sistema Nacional de Becas de la ANII (ANII’s regulations for the national scholarship system), in force since March 29, 2023.
  • It will be valued that the plan includes activities to be carried out in the productive sector, in public organizations or in other institutions not linked to the academic sector.
  • In the case of PhD candidates, projects involving research in Uruguay will be valued.
  • Fulbright is the most prestigious academic program in the U.S.

The Fulbright Commissions ensures a transparent and equal selection process. Phone calls to make suggestions on applicants have a negative impact on their selection and could be detrimental for applicants.

Because the Fulbright graduate grants include support for the process of application for universities in the U.S., which takes place during the second semester of the year prior to the start of the program.

Yes. Even if you already applied to the program, you will have to fill out the form again and submit it following the terms of the new call.

Yes, but if you had a recent or over six-month experience, then we will give priority to those who have still not had a significant experience living or studying in the U.S.

The form must be completed in English. Please read the terms carefully.

No. You will only have to sit for the TOEFL or the GRE/GMAT if you are selected as a candidate.

If you are selected as a candidate, you will have to have your TOEFL results by September 30 and your GRE or GMAT (MBA applicants) by October 31 of the year you are going through the application process.

We suggest candidates start studying for their exams in advance.

At the first stage of the process, applicants need one recommendation letter. Selected candidates will need three recommendation letters to apply to universities.

When first applying for the grant, applicants only need the diploma in its original language. Selected candidates will have to submit the diploma, the academic record, and the ranking translated into English in order to apply to universities.

No. Fulbright does the application process once the candidate is selected.

Fulbright does not have a list of universities, since candidates can apply to any accredited university, either public or private, in the U.S.

In the application form the applicant can choose up to three universities. If selected, the candidate, along with the Fulbright Commission and the American agency that administers the program, will design a plan that usually includes four universities for master’s candidates and five universities for PhD candidates.

1) Revision: Requirements revision by Fulbright Uruguay.

2) Academic evaluation: Each field is assigned a committee to evaluate applications.

3) Interviews: Candidates are interviewed by the committees.

4) Approval by ANII’s and Fulbright’s boards.

5) Final approval: By the Foreign Fulbright Scholarship Board in the U.S.

Yes. Candidates can receive additional support, such as personal funds, education loans, and other kinds of grants.

Yes. The J-1 visa allows students to work a maximum of 20 weekly hours on activities related to their field of study.

Yes, students can travel with dependents (spouses and unmarried children under the age of 21), and they travel with a J-2 Visa. Fulbright does not cover the expenses of family members; the scholar is responsible for their expenses during their entire stay in the United States, and thus they must prove they can afford to take them when issuing the visas.

Fulbright grants last one year and can be renewed for a second year.
